Netball is a sport that was born out of the popularity of basketball in the United States, with the same concept being adopted to form the basic rules of netball as we know them today.
Martina Bergman-Osterberg was the first to introduce the sport as a variation on basketball to her female students at the Physical Training College in London in 1893 and the game soon expanded throughout the British Empire. The countries that make up the Commonwealth are still massively invested in netball, the Commonwealth Games being one of the largest global competitions for the sport.
The premise is the same as basketball - get the ball into the net, with the exception that in netball there are no backboards to bounce to ball off into the net, just the net atop a pole. Similarly to basketball there are restriction on the movements allowed by players within the game along with the non-contact rule; however netball has developed its own rules such as the 3 second limit a player has to hold onto the ball.
