Rugby was a sport developed at Rugby School in Warwickshire, where the folklore says student William Webb Ellis picked up the ball in a game of football in 1823 and ran with it, creating the game of rugby.
Although this is largely disputed as a myth, the William Webb Ellis trophy is awarded to the winners of the Rugby Union World Cup and the tale is still common amongst fans and players.
There are two codes of rugby which are now played around the world, largely in countries of the Commonwealth after the sport was spread via the British Empire. Rugby union which was the original format of the game and includes mauls, line outs and large rucks - this remains the most popular code globally - and rugby league.
League was created in the late 1800s as teams in Northern England began compensating players for their time - which went against the codes of the Rugby Football Union and led to the creation of rugby league, which is still popular in Northern England.
